The Music Lives On

I'm a big-time "Deadhead", i.e. a fan of the rock band The Grateful Dead. Shortly after lead guitarist and band leader Jerry Garcia died in 1995, I wrote this tribute song to him.

But I was never completely satisfied with the lyric. I put some things in there that didn't feel like a real reflection of who I was or how I felt. I rediscovered this song. With all my years of songwriting experience since I first created it,. I was able to re-write to so that it's a true expression of what Jerry meant to me.

It was back in high school first time I heard him play
The music calling to me, I fell in love that day
As if he channeled magic from a spirit world
Got me clapping hands so hard it almost hurt

So let’s go dancing in the rain
‘Cause even though he’s gone
The gift he gave won’t fade away
The music lives on

I’d drive all day or catch a plane see him with the band
Space and time dissolving all caught up in the dance
Then on the day he left us I sat down and cried
Now I just give thanks for all he left behind
